Gift guilt

In my book "Clutter's Last Stand" I just read about what to do with "personal treasures". He hit on one of the most difficult topics, gifts. Oddly enough, it was on my mind before I started my clutter diet. I don't want to give people I love more junk for their homes as my Christmas present.

It bothers me that we run frantically through the stores to find a gift, any gift, for someone when they don't really want/need it. I do (usually) put lots of thought into the gifts I give. I really try to think about the likes, needs and homes of the recipients of my gifts. I made my nieces princess dress-ups for Christmas last year, and I think little L lived in hers for 3 months. I love to hear things like that, but lets be honest not all my gifts to people have been a home run.

So, if I have gifted you an item that you don't really want. Something that just creates clutter and stress for you, I give you my permission to get rid of it without my feelings getting hurt. I give gifts to show my love and appreciation. If the gift is now causing grief, it is the opposite of what I want. Get rid of the junk, hold onto the memory of my love.

On that note, Christmas is around the corner, and I am a little nervous. I don't want to bring more un-used, un-loved junk into the house, but let's face it, kids love lots of junk at Christmas. Do any of you have any ideas on how to solve the gift gluttony? (for my personal family and also for extended family like grandparents)

I am also smack dab in the middle of my cleanse. Honestly, I am feeling lots of anxiety. Not really about throwing stuff out (at least 7+ big garbage bags full now!), I am just not sure there is a light at the end of the tunnel. Gotta keep going.......

Miriam, you are awesome!! I think it's time for you to give me a gift so I can throw it away and enjoy the memory of love.

We are not knick knack fans and we try really hard to avoid clutter. So, for Christmas, we use our philosophy and usually try to give consumables. Foods, chocolates, drinks, lotions, soaps, craft projects for the recipient. It's not always the case, but we do our best to think, "Is this something I want in my home for years or for a couple of months?" That helps guide our decisions.

Good luck and there is a light, believe me, it's a big light and a huge weight off of your shoulders. You go girl!!

I totally love the gifts you give. M has grown out of his robot jacket and gets so sad every time E gets to wear it!

Way to go on the cleaning out. DH and I have been discussing what we can do to make room for baby in our house and I think our junk (furniture) is holding us back.

Way to go!! Moving 5 times over the last few years have helped me purge, but I feel the same way with gift-giving. I don't like clutter/knick-knacks so I don't want to impose them on others. And I know gift cards seem terribly impersonable, but I feel if it's in a really cute possibly home-made card with a very personal note, it can mean a great deal more. Just a thought :)

Keep singing until the end of the song

Since my last post we lost 2 more precious babies.  On September 30, 2016 we lost our beautiful baby girl Felicity at 5 months.  Almost a year later, we found out we were expecting agin.  Sadly on Dec.1, 2017 we lost our little boy, Elijah.  I need to write their stories, but the feelings and emotions are still very raw and difficult.  While I hope to share them someday, today is not that day. Today is December 21, just a few more days until Christmas.  I LOVE Christmas.  The lights, smells, delicious food, family and friends, and especially the music.  I love to sing Christmas songs and look forward to it every year.  But this year it was hard to sing the songs I love so much.  This year singing about the miraculous birth brought sadness and even anger.  I have struggled to feel the Christmas Spirit. I imagine it is difficult to experience any loss during the Christmas season.  A holiday that focuses so much on family, fri...

Comparison: The Thief of Compassion

I have often heard the saying, "Comparison is the thief of joy", but as I have been navigating this road of loss and grief, I have noticed how often comparison denies us the opportunity to have true compassion for someone else.  Comparison is often well meaning and kind hearted, but when we or someone else compares grief, loss, or other trials and tribulations, it shifts the focus and burden of compassion off of us and minimizes the other person. A few moths ago I had a startling interaction that caused me to pause and reflect on this.  A great, well meaning friend said something along these lines, "You thought you had it rough loosing your babies, just imagine being in her shoes.....".  I smiled and nodded my head, but inside I was crushed.  Without going into specifics, the other woman unquestionably has some great difficulties ahead of her, but she didn't have to burry any of her children. How could the 2 circumstances possibly be compared? After the frie...

Starting a New Chapter, Part 1

It was late February, and Kent and I were sitting anxiously in the Doctor's office.  We were waiting to hear if our fears were correct, waiting to know if our baby had died.  Our fears were confirmed and our lives changed forever.  That baby we had prayed about and prayed for, the baby we were excitedly expecting was gone. We were at the beginning of our second trimester.  I was just starting to relax, the worry of miscarriage was all but gone.  Things had been going well.  I had normal pregnancy issues like nausea, and I was relieved that my Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) had gone into remission (that can happen when you are pregnant).  Ultra-Sounds had shown us a beautiful healthy baby. The decision to have another baby was not an easy one to make.  The meds I take for RA are dangerous to take during pregnancy and take quite a bit of time to leave your system.  I also knew that while I might go into remission during pregnancy, I...
